- Gelynis Farm Footbridge is a single span riveted iron plate girder through truss which serves as a public footpath over the River Taff, nr Morganstown, Cardiff.
The existing pedestrian walkway over the bridge consisted of transverse timber bearers supported at either end by 2 no. longitudinal timber members which span between the cross girders.
The works comprised the removal of the existing timber walkway and parapets and subsequent, design and replacement of pedestrian footway system.
The new footbridge was also widened to 1.5m from 0.9m, to facilitate its use by equestrians’ traffic. The existing parapet system was replaced with a 1.8m high parapet system adjacent to the water main, and a 1.4m high parapet system to the northern face of the bridge. The 1.8m high parapet adjacent to the water main was manufactured in easily demountable sections for emergency access to the water main.
- The bridge serves as a busy commuter route for pedestrian & cyclists therefore speed of construction was paramount.
Therefor despite the need for onsite fabrication the bridge was constructed and fabricated off site and rebuilt insitu.
Because the bridge spanned the river Taff it was difficult to undertake adequate survey prior to the scaffolding being erected therefore modifications to the design had to be made during construction to overcome physical constraints.
A close and flexible relationship with the Authorities & Landowners was essential to cooperation, in order to achieve successful outcome. - CLIENT:
