GWAELOD Y GARTH

  • Make Pedestrian safety improvements to rural lane serving as principle access to local primary school.

This project was located in a rural setting adjacent to protected woodland therefore a soft landscaping option was designed and built in conjunction with the client to maintain the character of the environment.

The rural green lane was extensively rutted and potholed resulting in it holding water for many days following inclement weather.

This and the presence of extensive tree root infestation from adjacent woodland which is protected by TPO, resulted in the installation of a SUDS compliant surfacing solution.

Rather than extensive excavation the carriageway levels were raised and a new environmentally sensitive surface was installed.

The whole surfacing system was designed to be a drainage attenuation system using a tree root blanket and stone retention geo-grid. This allowed surface water to be held in the structure of the surfacing and soak away slowly.

To provide a safe footpath for school children, an environmental sensitive footway solution was installed to endeavor to reduce the visual impact on the locality.

  • The location adjacent to protected woodland made excavation works slow and sensitively to avoid damage to protected trees.

Some residents objected to the site clearance and removal of non-protected trees and careful customer relations were needed to maintain efficient forward progress of the project

The project was successfully completed to program and in line with budget.
